WordPress Gutenberg

Gutenberg improvements that we will soon have in our WordPress

Our beloved WordPress is constantly updated. Either the core itself or the themes and plugins that we have installed.

Gutenberg has been part of the WordPress core for a long time and, although it is not receiving many improvements in these latest versions of WordPress, in its plugin version Many improvements have been added that are very interesting.

Next, we are going to see some that we will find soon in our version of WordPress.

WordPress widgets working with Gutenberg

In version 5.8 a new window was integrated to be able to edit the Widgets with the new content editor. If you install the new version of the plugin you can find this new functionality under Gutenberg > Widgets (Beta)

Although this functionality is still in beta and we may encounter some bug.

Personally, I think that the interface is very intuitive and is quite improved compared to the previous one.

The entire screen has a cleaner and clearer appearance.

In these widget areas we can add the blocks we need to customize it to our liking. We can add columns, embeds and other elements.

Custom Gutenberg Columns

The Gutenberg column block is the element that has been created the most love and hate among its users. Many of them know how to use it correctly and they love it and for others, like my colleague Paco, it is their biggest enemy.

In version 6.0 of the Gutenberg plugin, a feature that many have been waiting for has been added: customizable columns. Are columns can be adapted to the needs that we have at all times. For example, 2 columns, the first of them 20% of the width of the container and the other 80%.

Up to here everything great. It works quite well and we have no problems using it. But everything cannot be a flower garden and unfortunately we ran into some bugs when we start working with 3 columns or more.

When defining the sizes of each of the columns when there are more than 2, an attempt is made to dynamically "compensate" the widths between them. That is, every time we change the width of one of the 3 columns, the other 2 are modified alone.

Because of this, we can take a while to correctly configure the sizes we want.

In short, it is a positive change, but it is not quite finished, surely our colleagues from the Gutenberg development team will correct it soon.

Animations when editing Gutenberg blocks

The experience of writing a post in Gutenberg is already quite comfortable and, once we get comfortable with the editor, its use becomes easy for us. There are still many improvements ahead, especially if we compare it with other WordPress editors, such as Elementor and Divi.

In version 6.1 of the plugin a new feature has been added. improved editor interface. In this case, they are animations when moving a block through the post, using the navigation arrows that appear to the left of each block.

This improvement may seem like a small thing, but the truth is that when we get used to the transitions, going back to the sudden movements that the default blocks have is a bit annoying.
